Building cities
Tamil Nadu is the Indian state with the highest rate of urbanization: more than 40% of its population lives in urban areas, with an impressive density of 555 inhabitants per square Km (compared with 201 inhabitants per square Km in Italy). The poorest are doubly powerful protagonists of this phenomenon. On the one hand, many farmers choose more or less forced to leave the impoverished countryside in search of work, and secondly, once they arrive in the city, are often used in the construction sector that in India employs over 33 million people, with a high percentage of women. In Tamil Nadu the minimum daily wage would be around € 2, but the informality and the fragmentary nature of this sector do not offer any kind of guarantee for workers daily exposed to physical, environmental and social risks.
